Invoering
De MA in Japanese Studies aan SOAS is de meest uitgebreide in Europa.
Je kunt modules kiezen die de geschiedenis van Japan bestrijken van het pre-moderne tijdperk tot het heden, en die zowel sociale en politieke wetenschappen als geesteswetenschappen omvatten. Studenten die dit programma volgen, komen uit veel landen en hebben een brede academische achtergrond.
Sommigen hebben al in Japan gestudeerd of gewoond en willen hun kennis of begrip verbreden. Anderen willen hun vooropleiding richten op de regio, terwijl weer anderen uit Japan of andere Oost-Aziatische landen komen en Japan willen bestuderen vanuit het perspectief van een andere cultuur en academische traditie. Kennis van de Japanse taal is geen vereiste voor het programma. Taalmodules zijn echter wel populaire opties.
SOAS heeft zijn eigen Japan Research Centre en deelt het Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Culture met de University of East Anglia. Studenten zijn welkom op de regelmatige seminars die door de centra worden gehouden, waar internationale sprekers hun onderzoek presenteren over verschillende aspecten van de studie in Japan.

Studenten nemen in totaal 180 studiepunten op, waarvan 60 studiepunten een proefschrift zijn, 15 studiepunten worden toegewezen aan de kernmodule en de overige 105 studiepunten worden gekozen uit andere onderwezen modules. Studenten moeten minimaal 45 studiepunten aan modules kiezen uit Lijst A (modules gerelateerd aan Japan) en maximaal 60 studiepunten uit Lijst B, die taalmodules en centrale PGT-opties omvat.
Voor studenten die ervoor kiezen om taalverwervingsmodules in meer dan één taal te volgen, kan slechts één daarvan op introductieniveau zijn.
In the first term, students will be asked to choose the module on which they will base their dissertation. The convenor of this module will usually be their dissertation supervisor. The module will usually be chosen from List A modules within the department, but after consultation with the programme convenor, it may be possible to arrange for a supervisor from another department.
